Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein found in human milk, including colostrum, at a rate of 7 grams of Lactoferrin per litre of colostrum. Lactoferrin is a major component of the intestine and the immune system, especially for newborns, as it helps to fight off infections from the first days of life. It becomes indispensable for adults in order to regulate the intestinal microbiota.
Lactoferrin is found at the entrance of orifices (nose, mouth, ears, eyes) to destroy possible intruders. It is an integral part of nasal, ophthalmic and genital secretions, tears, saliva and intestinal mucus, which constitute entry points for micro-organisms. Lactoferrin thus exerts its protective action on all tissues of the body.
Lactoferrin is a nutrient of choice for both children and adults. It does not contain casein. Moreover, it protects the mucous membrane of the small intestine from micro-organisms thanks to its bifidogenic action, which stimulates the endogenous flora.
