Lutein

20 MG

Lutein is a natural pigment that belongs to the family of oxygenated carotenoids. It is one of the most abundant natural carotenoids and pigments in the macula of the eye and brain.

Mammals cannot synthesize carotenoids, they need external input from food or supplementation. Lutein is the most abundant carotenoid in the retina of the fetus from the third month. In adults, lutein is present in the peripheral area of the retina and the lens.

The eye is continuously exposed to oxygen and is thus subject to the aggression of free radicals from the environment, pollution and the sun. Over time, lutein decreases in the central macula region. The carotenoid content of the macula decreases by a factor of 100 over time.

Lutein is an antioxidant that regulates the aggression of the main free radicals and their deleterious action on membranes, cells and tissues:

  • singlet oxygen
  • superoxide
  • the hydroxyl radical
  • lipofuscin

Lutein filters and absorbs high-energy short-wave blue light between 415 and 455 nm present in white LED light for domestic use. It is present in our environment and represents a source of continuous aggression to the cells of the eye. The cornea and the crystalline lens are the structures that protect the eye and especially the retina.

Blue light is the most damaging fraction of visible (white) light. It is particularly aggressive because it initiates an overproduction of intracellular free radicals in the cornea. It passes through the cornea and the lens to the retina and causes damage to the mitochondria of the corneal cells, the lens and the retinal pigments. The mitochondrion is the zone present in each of our cells whose function is to produce energy.

The interception efficiency of blue light in descending order of the different carotenoids is as follows:

  1. lutein
  2. zeaxanthin
  3. beta-carotene
  4. lycopene

People with more macular pigments such as lutein are more tolerant of light exposure and are more sensitive to contrast.

Actions on the skin

Lutein is present and participates in the protection of skin membranes. It intervenes at the level of the cell membranes that it protects by intercepting free radicals coming in particular from the environment.

Lutein reduces UV damage from the sun thanks to its high filtration capacity. It thus improves the skin's hydration and elasticity.

Brain functions

Lutein accounts for about 70% of the carotenoids in the brain. The brain is rich in essential fatty acids (DHA and EPA). These are nutrients of high nutritional value but are nevertheless fragile and susceptible to strong oxidation. Lutein is positioned in the membranes devoted to DHA, which it protects. They thus preserve their fluidity and can thus promote easy reading of messages and neurotransmission.
